The Department of Chemistry at Colorado State University, CSU, operates and maintains the Central Instrument Facility, CIF, in a large basement laboratory located at the footsteps of the Rocky Mountains.

The CIF has a traditional complement of sophisticated instruments including magnetic resonance spectrometers and mass spectrometers as well as instruments dedicated to materials science such as X-ray thin-film and powder diffractometers; Raman and infrared spectrometers; a spectroscopic ellipsometer, thermal analysis (DSC, DTA, TGA), and UHV-XPS/Auger spectrometers.

The instruments are available for use mainly by principal investigators and their associates at CSU and also by other academic collaborators and other interested third parties after appropriate review.

The CIF is directed by Dr. Christopher Rithner. There are several full time professional staff scientists, each with their own specific experise, and student assistants available to aid with operation of the instrumentation.
