Graduate Study

With the Rocky Mountains as a backdrop, Colorado State offers opportunities for graduate study leading to the doctor of philosophy degree in chemistry.

Graduate classes emphasize the most modern concepts and are taught by an internationally respected faculty.

Degree Programs in Chemistry

Research Ph.D. programs are available in the fields of analytical, inorganic, organic, physical, and materials chemistry. Interdisciplinary programs of study which cross traditional boundaries are encouraged.

Students who do not complete the Ph.D. program may transfer to an M.S. program. However, initial admission is only to the Ph.D. program.

The Chemistry Department fully supports accepted Ph.D. students who remain in good academic standing via Graduate Teaching or Graduate Research Assistantships.

In 2004-2005 the average stipend plus fellowships was $21,500 for first year students ($18,000 for graduate teaching assistantships plus an average of $3,500 in additional fellowships). The Chemistry Department also pays tuition for its Ph.D. students, which in 2004-2005 for first year, out-of-state students was $14,929 ($4,206 for in-state students). Thus, for first year, out-of-state students total support averaged $36,429 ($25,706 for in-state students).

Admissions Requirements

In order to be considered for admission to the Department of Chemistry at Colorado State University, the following documents are required:

• Two official transcripts from each post-secondary school attended
• Three letters of recommendation from persons familiar with your chemistry abilities
• Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores.

• A personal statement covering your background, reasons for attending graduate school, and postgraduate goals.

In addition to these requirements, all international applicants must provide the following:

• Official TOEFL examination scores.
• Official, tranlated copies of any transcript submitted from a non-English speaking country.
