Program in Materials Chemistry Research:
Synthesis, Characterization, and Device Fabrication

REU students will be working in the general area of
photoelectrochemical energy conversion. One project involves discovering metal
oxides that are capable of the efficient photoelectrolysis of water using
visible light. We use ink jet
printing of oxide precursors to produce large numbers of metal oxide
compositions that we then screen for photoelectrolysis activity by immersing
them in an electrolyte solution and scanning a laser over the surface to map
the photocurrent response.
Detailed investigation of the composition, structure, stability and
efficiency are then performed on materials that show promising activity.
